The protocol

How we test

Pens compare on axes here, not vibes. The same measures run across every pen we cover, so a verdict tells you who a pen is for — not just whether we liked it.

The measures

Each review is built from the same repeatable observations. We publish them so you can weigh what matters to you — a journaler and a note-taker read the same page and reach different, correct answers.

  1. 01 · Line width

Every nib is written on the same standardized paper and measured against a reference scale, then translated to the Japanese/Western sizing both worlds understand. A “fine” means a number here, not a vibe.

  2. 02 · Dry time

Timed on one fixed paper until a dragged finger stops smearing. We report the seconds, because left-handed overwriters buy on this number and adjectives fail them.

  3. 03 · Flow & wetness

Rated on a consistent ink and nib pairing — dry, medium, wet — with notes on hard starts and skipping after a capped rest, the failure modes that matter in daily use.

  4. 04 · Out-of-box tuning

What arrived: baby’s bottom, tine alignment, factory oils. We say whether a pen needed a flush or a fingernail nudge to write its best, because that is the real first-day experience.

  5. 05 · In the hand

Section comfort, weight posted and unposted, balance, and whether the cap seals well enough to leave inked. Comfort over a long session beats spec-sheet grams.

What we claim — and what we don’t

We are researchers and organizers. Our verdicts synthesize the standardized measures above with the documented consensus of the fountain-pen community — r/fountainpens, the Fountain Pen Network, and the long-running blogs that came before us. We do not fabricate lab conditions we didn’t run, and we do not claim credentials the hobby doesn’t issue.

Where a claim is our judgment rather than a measurement, we say so. Where a pen is polarizing, we tell you the axis of disagreement instead of pretending there’s one right answer.
